The Wimborne and District Poppy Appeal 2020 launches at 1000 hrs on Saturday 24th October, albeit without the usual fanfare and parade. We are all facing challenges with COVID-19 and this Appeal is no different.
The Appeal makes a vital contribution to supporting retired and injured Service personnel and their dependants in almost every aspect of daily life. This support has never been more necessary than in the past few months.
Historically, the people of Wimborne and surrounding villages have been magnificent in their support and so, with this in mind, the local Poppy Appeal committee is determined that they are given the opportunity to continue to make a valuable and meaningful contribution this year.
Clear and detailed direction has been given by the Royal British Legion on what is permissible to ensure the safety of both volunteer collectors and the public. Accordingly, the ways in which collections are made this year have been restricted.
House-to-house and hand-to-hand collections are not permitted as social distancing cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, to comply with these guidelines, Poppy Appeal items will be available via 2 static stalls and via the RBL clubhouse on West Borough.
The stalls will be sited on Wimborne Square and, hopefully, somewhere on Willow Walk in the vicinity of Waitrose (although permission is still being sought for this). Poppies, 2020 enamel pins, and other poppy related items will be available, and donations may be made via contactless machines, QR codes, or by cash in the normal way.
We hope to have the stalls out every day over the Remembrance fortnight, but this will be dependent upon volunteer support. Volunteers are required and we would be very grateful if you could spare even 1 hour to help staff the stalls. PPE will be provided and COVID-19 guidance supplied.
Poppies may be available via other outlets locally but only if that outlet has opted in to supporting the Appeal and requested them. Therefore, availability this year is greatly reduced.
If you are able to help us staff our stalls then please PM me. I would also be very happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
