The Annual Spring Coffee Morning to raise funds for Wimborne in Bloom was held at the home of the Chairman Anthony Oliver, MBE and his wife Christine last Saturday and raised £618 towards this year’s ‘In Bloom’ Campaign. “The morning was a great success and the fine weather allowed people to sit and enjoy their coffee in the garden. The amount raised was the highest achieved at any of our coffee mornings”, said Anthony Oliver after the event. He thanked all those who supported the event, whether by attending, by giving a donation, as a helper or by provision of a raffle prize or items for the bring and buy and plant stalls.

The money raised will be used towards this years ‘In Bloom’ Campaign, for the purchase of plants, hanging baskets and also to continue the planned programme of replacing the wooden half barrels around the town some of which are coming to the end of their useful life.

The Coffee Morning was attended by the Town’s new Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr. Terry and Mrs Pauline Wheeler as one of their first engagements of the new Mayoral Year. The Mayor is Secretary of Wimborne in Bloom and has nominated Wimborne in Bloom as one of his chosen Charities for his Mayoral Year.

The date for the Judging of the Town in the Small Town Category of the South and South East in Bloom Competition was announced at the Coffee Morning. It will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 15th July. The local Wimborne in Bloom Competition will be held during the same week, from Monday 12th to Saturday 17th July. Entry forms will be distributed around the town and extra copies will be available in the Tourist Information Centre.

Wimborne will need to be at its very best if we are to stand any chance of winning back the Small Town Trophy. We need plenty of overflowing hanging baskets, window boxes and planters etc., and absolutely no litter, cigarette ends, chewing gum or graffiti to spoil things.

The Wimborne in Bloom Committee and their band of volunteers will be very grateful if all traders and residents will join them in their efforts to keep Wimborne looking clean and colourful throughout the year by spending  a few moments each day to ensure that the outside of their premises is weed and litter free. A Litter Pick of the Town will take place the weekend before the judging.

160 hanging baskets have been ordered from Little Banks Nursery and will be erected throughout the Town centre in early June. This week our contractor, Heathlands Garden Services have planted up the flower towers in the Square and Cornmarket and around 80 or so half barrel planters around the town. They will maintain them throughout the summer.

We need to fill every nook and cranny to ensure our town is a blaze of colour .With everyone’s help we can do it and it certainly makes for a better environment for residents and visitors alike.

Our next event is on Sunday 20th June when 21 Gardens will be open in aid of Wimborne in Bloom funds. Watch out for leaflets and posters giving full details.
