2008 Arrives With A Big Bang!

At midnight on New Years Eve, Wimborne Square reverberated to the sound of 17th Century muskets being fired to herald the start of 2008.
Members of Wimborne Militia arrived at the Kings Head Hotel shortly before midnight having escorted the Mayor, Cllr Anthony Oliver MBE, and the Mayoress in a procession through the town led by a piper. Cllr Oliver addressed the crowd that had gathered in Wimborne Square and the Reverend Canon John Holbrook gave a blessing for the new year. Following the countdown and on the stroke of midnight the Militia fired a volley to welcome in 2008.
It was something of a double celebration for the Mayor who learned last Saturday that he had been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year honours list.
