2017 is the 49th year of being twinned the town of Valognes in Northern France. It’s an impressive milestone, being one of the oldest twinning associations! On alternate years, visitors are invited from Wimborne Minster to Valognes and vice versa. This year saw our Mayor Cllr Terry Wheeler and his wife Pauline travel to Valognes with 30 members of the twinning association over the weekend of May 12th-14th. They were given a warm welcome with many people in the town turning out to welcome them at a civic reception on Saturday morning. Councillor Wheeler impressively addressed the audience with a speech in french previously translated for him, by an association member.
Those traveling from the area to Valognes were very generously accommodated by residents of the town to keep costs down for the visitors – as all trips are self funded. The visitors were very impressed by the welcome received by their hosts.
Cllr Wheeler said “We were treated royally by our hosts, who genuinely and enthusiastically value the link between the two towns. I hope that we can show our friends from Valognes that we value it equally when they visit us for the 50th anniversary next year”.
